Christinae Church - German Church - Gothenburg (Göteborg)

The growing German and Dutch Assembly in  Gothenburg needed in connection with the town's founding in the beginning of the 17th century a place for their religious practice. In 1623 a small wooden chapel was used, but already in 1634 was the cornerstone laid for a large new church built of yellow Dutch brick. The church, inaugurated in 1648, was named after Queen Christina. She donated several times means for the building and granted the privileges to the church.

The interior decoration of the church was finished when a fire destroyed it completely in 1669. Thanks to the rich gifts could start reconstruction immediately.

In 1746 the city was hit by another devastating fire which gave great damages at the church. However the walls could be reused. The church was completed again 1783 and was then regarded as the most impressive building of Gothenburg. An organ was inaugurated 1788, the pulpit was completed in 1797 and the altar in 1798.

The church was completely renovated in 1817 with new desks, windows, enlarged altar etc.

In the eastern extension of the church stands the grave chapel of the Ascheberg family, built in 1682.
