Gothenburg Cathedral (Göteborgs domkyrka), Sweden

Göteborgs domkyrka ca 1830 - efter teckning av Leonard Björkfeldt

Gothenburg Cathedral - Göteborgs domkyrka - Sweden.

The cathedral, official name Gustavi domkyrka, was built after the large fire in 1802 which destroyed the earlier wooden cathedral from 1621.The new cathedral was inaurgurated in 1815, but the tower was finished later. In this picture we see the cathedral around 1830. The channel in the foreground is nowadays filled up and the street is namned Västra Hamngatan.

The central parts are the nave with cross arms and the chancel in an apse.

The neo-classic architecture is evident by the Doric columns around the portal seen above, but also by the massive walls and the sparsely decorated church room. The church is built by the characteristic yellow Flensburger brick, a material often used in Gothenburg.

Diocese of Göteborg (Gothenburg), the County of Västra Götaland and the Province of Västergötland. Lithography of A. Hårdh after a drawing by Leonard Björkfeldt.
