Kuggören Chapel for
Fishermen, Hälsingland
(Note the
second image below the text)
Kuggören, also called Kuggörarna, is an old
fishing village on Hornslandet at the coast of Hälsingland. Today there
are only three professional fishermen living among the around thirty homes
on Kuggören, but the old beautiful environment is preserved in a reverent
way. The settlements consist of closely spaced small cottages with
boathouses and bridges.
Already in the middle ages, organized fishing was conducted along the
coast of Norrland. The fishermen came from southerly towns as Uppsala,
Norrtälje, Södertälje, Köping and Strängnäs. As the fishermen were away
from home during long times they needed places to held Christian services.
For this reason there were built many small chapels along the coast. Only
the Hudiksvall area have no less than seven.
The chapel at Kuggören is located near the sea on a hill of rubble stones.
It was built 1778. The exterior is boarded and painted red with white
corners and shutters. The exterior door is yellow with yellow “sun rays”
shining down at the visitor.
All artwork was made by the
master painter Paul Hallberg of
Hudiksvall (1734 -
1789).
