  Strömbacka Chapel,  Hälsingland

Strömbacka is a village in the municipality of Hudiksvall. Once it was an important part of the industrial activity in the sparsely populated Hälsingland.  An ironworks forge was established in Strömbacka 1753, a place with good supply of water power. In Moviken a blast furnace was built in 1796 and Moviken was also the harbour at the northern of the Dellen Lakes to which iron ore was shipped.

1829 introduced Walloons forging in Strömbacka. This method was practiced right up to 1947. The old industrial plants in Strömbacka and Moviken are preserved and I highly recommend tourist to visit these unique and beautiful places in the summer.

The chapel was built in 1842 for the workers at Strömbacka. In order to avoid entrance from the lake the chapel was built with the entrance in the west, contrary to what is usual. The chapel has no church bells, but instead has two large triangles.

Strömbacka belongs to parish of Bjuråker, the Diocese of Uppsala, the County of Gävleborg and the Province of Hälsningland. Photo: Lars Henriksson, 12th of July, 2007.
