Stabbur in Telemark. Artist: Whymper. Woodcut from 1882.

A “stabbur” was a building for storing food, clothes and certain utensils. Often it was built on pillars to prevent from rats, mice etc. It was also built a bit from the other houses on the farm if a fire would come loose somewhere.

The “stabbur” was usually the only building in the farm that was locked.
