Gudbrandsdalen - Røisheim at Bøverdalen. Woodcut from 1882.
Gudbrandsdalen is a large valley and traditional district in the Norwegian fylke (county) of Oppland. The valley is oriented in a north-westerly direction from Lillehammer at Lake Mjøsa, extending 230 km toward Romsdal. The long valley is divided into three parts: Norddalen (North Valley), Midtdalen (Middle Valley) and Sørdalen (South Valley). Bøverdalen in the municipality of Lom is a smaller valley that is branching off Norddalen. It belongs to the Oppland Fylke (County). For many centuries a route went from Lom village up through Bøverdal and down into Sogn. Røisheim, seen in the middle of the woodcut above, is an old tourist station with many preserved farmhouses from the 18th Century. When passing the route to Sogn in early days, it was common that travellers rested at Røisheim. After Jotunheimen was "discovered", the place became more and more frequented by tourists. Galdhøpiggen was summitted for the first time in 1850, and Røisheim soon became a base for sport climbing in Europe. On Røisheim have you Jotunheimen right outside the door. The 2469 meter high peak of Galdhøpiggen and the few meters lower Glittertind is of course the most famous landmarks, but here are also more than two hundred other peaks of over two thousand meters. Jotunheimen National Park, which was created in 1980, is the most rock-filled landscape in Norway and in addition to the 27 highest mountains in the country. The park has many fertile valleys, a number of glaciers and several large lakes. Below: Route 55 at Jotunheimen. Photo by Kenny Louie 2008. Via Wikimeda Commons.
