Sweden,
Norway and Finland have together placed an order for 52 helicopters of
the medium-lift multi-role type NH 90. 18 of these will be provided to
the Swedish Power of Defence. NH Industries is a group of European
helicopter manufacturers including the French Eurocopter, the Italian
Agusta, and the German Eurocopter Deutschland. ”NH” is an
abbreviation for ”Nato Helicopter”.
The NH 90 prototype flew in December 1995. The Swedish
designation will be HKP 14. The 18 Swedish helicopters will cost about 600 millions
Euro including special equipment and training of personnel.
The
first HKP 14 is due for delivery in 2005. Five helicopters will be
equipped for naval missions. Anti-submarine warfare (ASW) will be an
important task.
For
ground operative missions, the HKP 14 can carry 20 fully equipped
soldiers.
The
fuselage is constructed of composite materials.
The
helicopter is twin-engined and will probably be powered by two RTM-322
turboshafts, delivering 2
x 2230 hp.
