Leonardo designed several helicopters; most of them
intended to be powered by human muscles. But during the years he worked
with the problem, he begin to understand that a machine must have a
rapidly rotating wing at the top – and this have to be powered by some
kind of mechanic power, for example a coiled spring like in a clockwork.
His most famous helicopter is the one seen here below. In full scale
operated by human power it would likely stay on the ground, but a model,
with a clockwork engine could very well have flown. |
