A photo of the aft part of 39-800 after it had been rebuilt to JAS 39D standards. The missile fitted on the wing tip pod is a RB 98 IRIS-T. The name is an acronym for Infra Red Imaging System Tail/Thrust Vector-Controlled. The missile is a joint venture between some European countries, where Germany has the greatest part. Also SAAB is involved in the development of the missile, which is intended to replace the aging RB 74 Sidewinder AIM-9L. | ||||

The first serial produced Gripen, JAS 39A # 39101, were
in reality used as a test aircraft (number 39-101, fin code 51). The
short-lived first prototype (39-1) needed a replacement. 39-101 was used
for verification of system functions and for testing of weapons. At the photo, 39-101 is armed with two RB 74 Sidewinder AIM-9B (painted green) and four air-to ground tactical missiles RB 75TV Maverick AGM-65 (white with blue strips). These missiles have an electro-optical television guidance system. Later, the aircraft got the tail pained as 39-800 above with a griffon and the text "TEST A/C 39A. The text "Meteor" were also applied to the fin. After 740 hours in the air, the aircraft is since December 2010 diplayed at Ängelholms flygmuseum, http://www.engelholmsflygmuseum.se |
